YRT / GO transit update

Add comment
In time for the fall rush of staff and students returning to both Seneca College and York University, YRT has responded to the considerable outrage that greeted GO's decision to cancel Route 64 ( www.geoffdawe.com/yrt-adds-york-university-route) and created the new route 22A. This new route is meant to service the route previously serviced by GO's 64. A quick look at the new schedule reveals that it is indeed a happy compromise. There are nine southbound and nine northbound trips daily (GO route 64 had trips all day; however, being frank, many of the mid day buses were virtually empty. Thus their elimination does not truly represent a hardship for those regular transit users). There are fewer stops at which you can catch the bus - GO would pick up riders at a number of points down Yonge Street, whereas Aurora riders of the new 22a will have to make their way to Yonge and Murray or Yonge and Bloomington. The trip now takes approximately 40 minutes which is comparable to the previous route. (For example, 8:54 bus from Yonge and Murray arrives at York U at 9:38).

The only draw back is that the YRT buses have less seating than the GO buses - and there is concern, by some riders, that the YRT buses will not be able to handle the volume of users - resulting, undoubtedly with most trips being standing room only. It remains to be seen if the new route will be able to handle the considerable volume of students and staff and faculty that used to take the former Route 64 - in particular the morning routes.

Admittedly, this is a compromise, and there are still some kinks to be worked out - perhaps more stops and/or bigger buses. But, the point is that MPP Frank Klees and Mayor Margaret Black deserve a great deal of thanks for their hard work and lobbying on behalf of Aurora residents to get this service.

My Perspective

It is essential to recognize that convenient public transit is an essential element in the quest to be more environmentally friendly. All municipal politicians need to understand the need to work with both their regional and provincial counterparts to get this done.

Today, September 20, 2010, is our 35th wedding anniversary!

And, in an obviously good omen, it's as sunny today as the day we got married!

Terry Fox Run

Add comment
Today is the 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox run, and I just got back from helping at the registration table.

(And, proving this is a small world, I was chatting with one of my teachers from St. Michaels College School!)

A great turnout. Most came from Aurora, but some folks came down from Barrie. They ranged in ages from about 18 months to 80 years and activity from walking, bicycling, rollerblading to running.

I remember when Terry Fox ran through this area. Henny’s step-mother and aunt were visiting from Holland and we wanted to take them to see this amazing young man. We ended up driving up north of Bradford and just parked by the side of the road and waited for him to come by.

In what had to be one of the classiest acts that I have experienced, Terry thanked us for being there!

My thanks to all the volunteers and participants. It is invigorating to see such support for these events.

Magna Hoedown

Henny & I had a great time at the Hoedown last night.

We had the opportunity to speak (before the bands started!)  with a lot of people , exchange some ideas and have some good food.

Really enjoyed Blue Rodeo as the headline act.

Kudos to the volunteers, Magna and all the other sponsors for such a successful night.

$514,000 raised for charity!! Very impressive.

It's so gratifying to be a part of a community that cares.

PS - check out the super-secret video that was recorded last night. It's over on the Aurora Citizen: auroracitizen.ca/2010/09/18/magna-hoedown-was-a-hit/

Fundraiser Update

Add comment
I just want to thank all those who attended my fundraiser last night at Wellington Gallery, and made a donation to the Aurora Food Pantry.

Anyone who thinks that the residents of Aurora are not interested in municipal politics or don’t care about the community should have been there to take in the energy in the room.

When I decided to ask supporters for non-perishable donations to the Aurora Food Pantry in lieu of selling tickets, I didn’t anticipate such an overwhelming response.

It is amazing to see just how easy it is to make a difference where it counts.

It makes me proud to be part of a community that cares!

If last night is any indication, we are well on the way to putting the Aura back in Aurora!
